"It was a demonstration of his pianistic voice; absolute clarity, purity of style, subtlety of chord balancing. His Rachmaninov (2nd Sonata) revealed a superb cantabile sound. The all-Liszt second half revealed amazing feats of pianism, allied to a deeply thought, controlled mastery of a tapestry of sound - which was shown at its best in Les Jeux d'Eaux a la Villa d'Este. In the Fantasy and Fugue on BACH the superhuman was triumphantly achieved."
